Avian Anatomy

Explanation of why duck's feet don't freeze

Loads of info on all parts of a bird's body

Avian Vets

This helps you find an avian vet in your area

Here are some that I have used or know have treated waterfowl successfully:

Dr. Summar, Homestead Animal Hospital, Centennial, CO         303-771-7350

Dr. Powers, Carolina Vet Specialists, Huntersville, NC

Dr. Funk, Mesa Veterinary, Mesa, AZ 480-833-7330

Dr. Daniel Burk, Cornerstone Animal Hospital, Gilbert, AZ   480-857-9229

Feed sources

The Purina Mills site has a locater service that will help you find a dealer in your area.  To find feeds on this site, click on "family livestock", then click on the chicken!

You'll find the same service for Mazuri watefowl feed here

For other feed sources check your local yellow pages for Feed & Grain stores.  Pet stores are NOT a good source for waterfowl feed.

Hatching Help

Mississippi State University has an excellent page on hatching

Shilala will also give you good incubating info

Housing, pools, etc.

Dri-Dek tiles come in interlocking 2' X 2' squares and have holes for drainage.  Good for indoor housing, outdoor housing and pen yards.  If you check under "mats, drainage", you will find many different kinds of these mats.  They keep water cleaner and mud puddles at bay when placed under and around bathing facilites like play pools, etc.

This site has a good portable pen for pets

This product is very expensive, but is neat, safe way to keep a backyard chicken, duck or goose

Keeping a backyard pool clean with ducks/geese swimming in it is difficult, but this vacuum may help

Health, Home Remedy, Medicine sources

Rescue Remedy is a natural potion used to calm stress and aid traumatized and/or injured birds, animals and people

The exotic pet vet site has very useful information including recommended items to keep in a home emergency kit for birds, taking care of the oil gland, etc.

Mississippi State University has put together some very helpful information on home poultry remedies

Parrot Talk has good pics showing how to clip wings

Herbal medications for all birds can be found at Avian Medicine Chest

groups

Geese 4 Pets has a lot of members who have outdoor geese, but some indoor goose owners join in also.  Nice group that is very willing to help with any problems.

The Pet Duck Association has been around a long time and has some loyal and longtime members.  I check in on it several times a week.  As with the above groups, members have both indoor and outdoor pets and are very helpful.

The Gander Gab has fun members and many topics are discussed in addition to those involving our feathered friends.

The Coop considers all fowl friends.  Lots of interesting discussions and helpful hints from experienced poultry lovers

Urban Chickens is another group that welcomes duck and goose lovers as well as chicken Moms & Dads.

Hatcheries

Note that most hatcheries must ship about 8 or more babies as they need each other for warmth, BUT METZER FARMS NOW USES A SAFE HEATING ELEMENT IN ORDER TO SHIP AS FEW AS TWO!  I recently ordered a gosling and a duckling.  They were hatched on Monday and I received them healthy and happy on Tuesday.  Some hatcheries may let you come to the hatchery to pick up just one little one, but the only one I know for sure will do that is Metzer Farms in California.  Maggie, Mimi, Lucy, Buttercup and Cricket were all born there.  They specialize in ducks and geese only and ship direct from the farm.  They are the only hatchery to promote having an indoor pet duck or goose and can be very helpful.

To get one duckling or gosling for a pet, ask the hatchery if they ship to feed stores in your area.  Then ask the feed store to add the bird of your choice (breed & sex) to their next order.

Duck Eggs sells  duck eggs for eating or hatching.  If you are allergic to chicken eggs, you may not be allergic to duck eggs.  They are excellent, especially for baking.  They specialize in providing schools, etc. with eggs for hatching projects. However, before you plan to hatch the eggs, make sure you have homes for the birds.  THEY CANNOT BE DUMPED IN PARK LAKES,etc.  Of course, now, the children can take them home, diaper them and live happily ever after.

Stromberg's  is an old, established hatchery.  You'll find most everything there, from incubators to pheasants!

SERVING THE UK!  WWW.GULLIVER-POULTRY.CO.UK

McMurray's  can also provide any birds or supplies you might need.

Cackleberry Hatchery is family owned and operated.  I'm sure their birds are of top quality.

Shootin' Star specializes in show quality geese.  Check out the gray Sebastopol!

Feathersite has a list of hatcheries that may help you out

Ideal Poultry in Texas is a very reputable hatchery

Country Critter Ranch is a great site.  They do sell Sebastopols, fancy ducks and other critters, but it is a little hard to find out how to order.  I think that's on purpose as she won't sell any of them unless she's sure they will be beloved pets!  If you're serious and can't figure it out, get in touch with me.

Breed Pictures & Info

You'll find great pics of different ducks and geese on Feathersite

The beautiful Buff geese at the bottom of the page are raised only for pets in the Netherlands.  I'm sure you will enjoy their site, www.buffganzen.nl .  Andrea is very helpful keeping me in touch with what is going on in Europe.  Click on the flag for English.

Another great site from the United Kingdom is www.ashtonwaterfowl.net.  Chris and Mike Ashton are very good breeders and also raise a lot of geese as pets.

The Domestic Waterfowl Club, a site from Great Britain, is one of my favorites for looking up different breeds

Waterfowl Rescuers

If you find a hurt or sick wild waterfowl (duck/goose/swan, etc.) it is best to contact a Waterfowl Rescuer, but if one can't be found, you can contact a Wildlife Rescuer.

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue does a great job and will go to great lengths to help any injured bird.  Located in Indian Trail, NC, they adopt out birds that have been rehabilitated and assist in waterfowl rescue wherever possible.  Great site to visit even if you don't need them now...they need your support and participation.

Lame Duck Rescue in Pearl River, LA does much the same work as Carolina Rescue.  They have their hands full now as they are rebuilding after katrina.  Fortunately their birds came through in good shape.  They do a great job of educating the public on how to take care of pet ducks/geese.  A must-see site.

To find a rescuer in your area, go to Wildlife Rehabber or contact either of the above sites.

Great sites to visit

Love Canada Geese is a very helpful site for anyone trying to save Canada geese from slaughter, etc.   It is a delightful site with interesting stories and articles about Canada geese.

Live Ducks is a fun and interesting site with good information on caring for ducks.  Great pics, stories, ducky gifts, and more! Be sure to check this out.

Path to Freedom has a great article about raising backyard ducks plus other info on gardening, etc.

The Seventh Avenue store has lots of great stuff, but two things of interest to waterfowl owners are the pet stroller and car seat.

Journey To Forever is a very informative site about small farming and poultry raising.  I warn you...it does have some terrible stuff about killing them, but you can learn a lot of helpful hints.

I know you'll find the Handicapped Pets site very interesting. The story about Sebastian is very heartwarming.

Waldheim Resort in Minnesota is sure to be fun place to stay as the owners are the proud parents of a house duck, Mucky. They are obviously "pet friendly"!

I will be adding more links in the future so be sure to check back from time to time.  If you would like me to add a link to your site, e-mail me at thedukldy@earthlink.net
